Codex CLI supports remote MCP servers over HTTP. Dovey is one entry in its config. Checked on September 24, 2026.
TLDR:
- Codex reads MCP servers from ~/.codex/config.toml. Dovey is one table entry with the address.
- Add [mcp_servers.dovey] with url = "https://api.makedovey.com/mcp" and restart Codex; the first call opens a browser sign-in.
- Ask in plain words; Codex calls Dovey's search, questions and creator tools.
- The same entry can live in a project's .codex/config.toml so a team shares it.
What the connector gives the assistant
Dovey is an MCP server. Connected, the assistant gets the same tools Dovey has: search the Meta Ad Library by meaning, open any advertiser's account, ask questions over the ads (angles, hooks, formats, run times, with sample sizes), read one ad in full (copy, versions, video transcript), find TikTok and Instagram creators by topic with their numbers, bookmark ads and save creators to lists. The assistant calls the tools; Dovey does the reading. Every ad it cites links back to its Ad Library page.
The address is the same everywhere:
https://api.makedovey.com/mcp
The steps
- Open
~/.codex/config.toml(create it if it does not exist). - Add the server:
[mcp_servers.dovey]on one line andurl = "https://api.makedovey.com/mcp"on the next. - Start Codex. The first Dovey tool call opens a browser sign-in; a free account works for search.
- Check with
codex mcp list.
What to ask
- "Search ads for AI note-taking apps, top performers first, and list the hooks."
- "Which formats perform best for supplement brands? Sample size please."
- "Find creators posting about running shoes with more than 2% engagement."
FAQ
Does Codex need an API key for Dovey?
No. The sign-in is OAuth in the browser; Codex keeps the token.
Can I use it in the Codex app or IDE extension?
